Richly carved with florid Roman foliage in the George IV antique manner popularised by Thomas King’s, ‘The Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified’, 1829, its general form is in common with the furniture at both Glynliffon and at Hackwod, Hampshire, supplied by Gillows to William, 2nd Baron Bolton in 1813. This design also relates to the suite of drawing room furniture made for a 'G. Bamford', the plan for which was prepared by Gillows of Oxford Street, between 1815-1835. This 'Pompeian' design is the epitome of the late Neoclassicism, introduced into English architecture and interior decoration by Robert Adam in late 1760's. Absolutely delightful chairs, covered in John Boyd Textiles luxurious horsehair fabric with brass trim. Having been preserved in almost untouched and unused condition, they did not require any serious restoration work except reupholstery.

This set belongs to a group of chairs closely related to a set, supplied by Thomas Chippendale Junior to Sir Gilbert Heathcote, for Normanton Park or one of his London residencies. The chairs, illustrated in Judith Goodison, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale Junior, 2017, pp.310–311, display very similar acanthus-carved back splats, that may be seen on other chairs from this group. Other examples include a set eight stamped 'B.Harmer', sold Sotheby's London, 21 March 2003, lot 135 and a further identical and stamped pair apparently from the same set, sold Christie's New York, 19 April 2001, lot 253. Another comparable set having more simply embellished backs of the same profile as the Normanton Park chairs and front legs identical to our chairs, was sold Sotheby's London, 30 June 2004, lot 200. Being evidently of the same model, some of these chairs might have originated from the same workshop or were copied from finer examples of the more prestigious makers, such as Chippendale, which was not unusual in the 18th century.

The stamp of the freelance craftsman/journeyman B. The house would become one of her masterpieces as she discovered her own vocation for interior design. Extant photographs reveal a number of changes that had been made to the interiors over time. The writer Maurice Sachs once wrote about Madeleine's passion for her home: “The constant transformations she made to the estate kept her as busy as the world can keep a socialite…”. Together with his sister Ekaterina (Catherine) he managed to escape the bolshevik Russian terror and remained in Paris for the rest of his life. A largely self-trained artist, he predominantly worked in watercolour and gouache, producing highly realistic interiors in a traditional style. Serebriakoff became well-known as a specialist interior painter, specifically for his paintings of Paris' hôtels particuliers, painting Daisy Fellowes' rooms at the Paris Ritz in 1948 and the Parisian apartment of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Le Château de Groussay. During his lifetime the artist showed his work in numerous group exhibitions in France and Belgium. It is known that Alexandre's sister Catherine, who also worked as an interior painter, collaborated with her brother on many projects, however, her signature often does not appear on the artworks, as she preferred Alexandre to sign the paintings himself.

Literature:

P. In the 18th century it was used commercially to indicate the place from which these objects were shipped to England through the East India Companies, and had no reference to China, the place of their origin. Similarly, Chinese painted wallpaper was often called 'India paper' in historic documants.

The kuancai lacquer technique, literally meaning “cut out colour” and found almost exclusively on screens, emerged in the 16th century to serve the domestic market. The iconographic elements were carved through the built-up coats of dark lacquer and filled with pigments and gold. Seventeenth century examples usually consisted of twelve panels, and were often employed in entrance halls or as room dividers or windscreens for gardens and terraces. They were often commissioned as gifts and depicted court scenes, episodes from the world of the immortals, panoramic or landscape views and auspicious symbols. This type of lacquerware was flourishing during the reign of the Kangxi emperor (1662-1722) and saw a revival in the 19th century.

Stylistically the present screen may be compared with the twelve-panel lacquer screen from the Kangxi period in the Victoria and Albert Museum illustrated by W. In the 20th century, Coromandel screens still remained a staple in the European interior design. Coco Chanel had a collection of 32 rare Coromandel screens, which she proudly displayed in her home at 31 Rue Cambom, Paris. She one stated "I've loved Chinese screens since I was eighteen years old.
