About This Object
A super chic pair of custom-made columns or stands, trompe l’œil painted to simulate imperial red porphyry. Perfect as bust or urn stands, fabulous as cocktail or lamp tables, or even as bedside tables.
Why we love it
Their design represents the Tuscan order, an adapted Roman version of the ancient Greek Doric order, defined by unfluted (smooth) column shafts and simple bases.
Egyptian red porphyry is also called Roman Imperial porphyry (porfido rosso romano). The term ‘porphyry’ derives from the Ancient Greek πορφύρα (porphyra), meaning “purple.” Imperial porphyry comes from 600-million-year-old volcanic rock quarried at Gabal Abu Dukhan in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, discovered by the Romans in AD 18. It is highly prized for its rarity and its noble, imperious colour — a deep purplish-red long regarded as a symbol of power.
