A rare and superbly decorative set of three Chinese export black lacquer boxes, exquisitely gilt-decorated with figures and armorial devices.
Qing dynasty, early 19th century.
Why we like them
Armorial lacquerware being extremely rare, these exquisite boxes are true collectors' pieces. Impossible to find in such superbly preserved, original condition.
Such luxurious items were popular in England during the height of fashion for oriental exoticism, called chinoiserie in Europe. Available to order through best luxury goods retailers of the era, such exquisite items as lacquerware, botanical gouaches or reverse-painted glass, were manufactured in Canton to be shipped to Britain. Only the wealthiest and most powerful patrons could commission items, adorned with their family armorial device, coat of arms, or a crest, or a motto. While the identity of the owner of the coat of arms displayed on the present boxes remains a mystery and requires further research, these extremely rare, exquisite objects are nonetheless most wonderful addition to a serious collection.
