Antique Egyptian Alabaster Vessel
Antique Egyptian Alabaster Vessel
An interesting Egyptian alabaster vessel,
Possibly 19th century in the style of Old Kingdom (2686-2160 BC).
Why we like it
The large size, smart shape and dramatic veining make this unusual vessel very decorative and suited for a variety of interiors.
Vessels of this form, although usually much smaller in size and often with lids, were used by ancient Egyptians for storing kohl, used for ceremonial purposes. The uneven surface of this particular example attest to it having been hand-chiseled, not turned on a lathe; the inside is waxed, as is typical of hand-made pieces; there are old restorations to the collar.
