A delightfully detailed nude figure of a youthful athlete, finely sculpted Carrara marble in the ancient Greek or Roman style, mounted on a Rosso Verona base.
Italy, circa 1900.
Why we like it
The ultimate Grand Tour souvenir, this delightful sculpture is a perfect addition to a classical or contemporary interior.
The form and details of the present example recall the Westmacott Ephebe, now in the British Museum, which is considered a Roman copy of a late 5th century B.C. original by Polykleitos. The type served as the inspiration for numerous variants during the Roman Period, with the addition of differing attributes changing the subject.
