A stunning gold-leaf decorated and lacquered table lamp of large proportions, made in the Art Deco 'Egyptomania' taste in mid-20th century. France, circa 1940's–60's.
Why we like it
We love the robust proportions of this splendid lamp, its bold, chunky torch-shaped design, highlighted with gold-leaf gilding and lacquer – a statement of luxury without exuberance.
Design
Modelled as a highly stylized representation of Ancient Egyptian djed-pillar, a symbol signifying permanence, later associated with the god Osiris. As a hieroglyph, the djed-pillar denotes the more abstract concepts of stability, endurance, and rejuvenation.
