We like the unusual delicacy and lightness of this chair, and the age-softened look of its charming, somewhat naive decoration. In this remarkably good stste of preservation without breaks or repairs, this chair is highly decorative and rare.

Design

The design and decoration of this chair embodies early 19th century's romantic fashion for exoticism, and is really a curious cocktail of Gothic, Ottoman and Chinoiserie motifs, in accordance with the fashion promoted in the early 19th Century at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales, who became King George IV in 1820. Between 1815 and 1822, the designer John Nash redesigned and greatly extended the Pavilion. The fanciful interior design, primarily by Frederick Crace and the little-known decorative painter Robert Jones, was heavily influenced by both Chinese and Indian fashion (with Mughal and Islamic architectural elements).
