George III Chippendale tilt-top tripod table with a laminated fret galleried circular top, above the central pillar flanked by three finely carved, imbricated and scrolling foliate dolphins, raised on legs with swags and bell flower carved decoration. English, c. 1760.

The table's elegant base with its open stem and scroll legs derives from patterns for 'claw tables' and 'tea kettle stands' published by John Ince and William Mayhew in their Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762 (pl. XIII and XIV) as well as 'bason stands' in Thomas Chippendale's Director of the same year, pl. LV.

Provenance: Private Collection, Dallas, Texas.

A related table from the estate of Andrew Gordon was offered at Sotheby's Importand English and European Decorative Arts sale in New York on 22 October 2014, see lot 115
