Fine Neoclassical Mahogany Stool
Fine Neoclassical Mahogany Stool
A superb English 18th century neoclassical style stool or bench in the manner of Robert Adam, possibly a later copy to extend the original set,
Circa 1880.
The guilloche and acanthus leaf carved scrolling padded arms, flanking the traditionally upholstered seat, covered in lime green Gainsborough Silk Damask, over an anthemion and palmette carved frieze, raised on eight foliate carved and fluted legs ending in reeded feet.
A virtually identical example slightly differing in decoration, almost certainly designed by Robert Adam and made by William France and John Bradburn is at Kenwood House, London, together with a further closely related example in carved giltwood.
A related design for a 'Scroll Sopha' by Robert Adam, prepared for Sir Laurence Dundas of Moor Park, is in the collection of Sir John Soane's Museum.
