A wonderfully decorative Chinese export six-panel screen, exquisitely hand-painted with 'One Hundred Boys' motif, on a silvered background.
China, Republic period.

Why we like it

The exquisite quality of decoration and its fresh, contemporary feel, although made in a very traditional artistic manner. Perfect for contemporary and eclectic interiors, also as a large decorative wall panneau.

The 'One Hundred Boys' Motif

The popular pictorial motif of One Hundred Boys has obvious auspicious connotations in the Chinese tradition. This depiction of children in a scholarly setting is symbolic of success.

While the felicitous theme of 'One Hundred Boys' first appeared in China during the Song dynasty (960–1279), this screen is indebted to prototypes from the later Ming era (1368–1644), when the subject also appeared widely on ceramics and other decorative arts objects. The detail, variety, and sheer number of figures, exquisitely hand-painted over a silvered background is astonishing.

Condition

Minor signs of age and use, occasional rubbing, spotting and touchups to decoration. Wallpaper on the back is distressed and may be replaced upon request if intended as a centre piece.
