A Superb mid-18th Century George II period Solid Mahogany Corner or Handkerchief Table, of desirable small proportions

English, c. 1750.

The triangular solid mahogany top, having a rear-drop leaf, with a moulded edge and re-entrant opposing corners, the drop leaf swinging up to form a square surface, being supported by a gate-leg; the plain veneered frieze, raised on four cabriole legs with lappets and pad feet.

Gillows of Lancaster and London, one of Britain's most celebrated cabinetmakers of the 18th and 19th centuries, illustrated their design for an identical table in their estimate sketch book for 1768/9 (see L Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, fig. 52)

Great colour and patina, superb versatile accent piece.
