A fine quality early 19th century Regency - George IV period library armchair, of deep generous proportions, in dense solid mahogany, covered in crimson damask, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London.
English, circa 1830.

Why we like it

Besides from its restrained, quintessentially Regency design, this armchair is distinguished by its unusually large proportions, being the most deep-seated chair from that period that we have ever seen. Its austere, unembellished masculine design makes it a perfect gentleman's library armchair. The reeded front legs on original oversize brass castors and panelled front seat rail can be found on other examples of the Gillows output from early 19th century, of which we sold a few.

Extremely heavy quality, the seat is now sprung for extra comfort.

Established in the early 18th century, Gillows of Lancaster are among the few most celebrated English furniture makers, famed for their use of fine timbers and exceptional quality of craftsmanship.
