George III Figured Mahogany Chest of Drawers

A George III period chest of drawers, of pleasing colour and desirable compact proportions

English, c. 1760

The rectangular top with applied moulded edge, over a brushing slide with brass axe head pull handles, above an arrangement of four long graduated oak lined cockbeaded drawers, retaining the original locks, keyhole escutcheons and gilt brass swan neck handles with circular back plates, over a further moulding to the base with four shaped bracket feet. Veneered in well-figured fiddleback mahogany throughout.

The chest is closely related to a George Hepplewhite's design, illustrated in his 'The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide', 1788, pl. 75.

Fine antique condition, great colour, striking grain and superb patina, historic split to one side board. Diminutive size, only 31 in wide overall.
