An unusual gilt bronze 'Athénienne' table lamp in the Grand Tour taste. 20th century.
Why we like it
Formed of three arrows, this design derives from the sacrificial tripods, later known as athéniennes that were used in ancient Greece and Rome, the original examples found at excavations at Pompeii or Herculaneum. Supported on classical tripod stands, athéniennes were adapted for lighting and burning perfumes, as plant holders or as stands for decorative vases and urns.
