An exquisite and rare etching of Saint Sebastian, after P. Novelli, engraved by P. de Colle

Venice, circa 1750–70.

 

Why we like it

Exquisitely engraved in the 18th century, the print represents St. Sebastian, the saint much revered by men in Italy and France.

 

Original copper-plate engraving, signed in the bottom P. Ant. Novelli inv., P. de Colle sculp. ap. Cavalli Venetiis.

 

History

Artist: Pietro Antonio Novelli (1729–1804)

Painter, book designer, occasional etcher and poet. Born in Venice, much work in north Italy.

Engraver: Pellegrino da Colle (1737–1812)

Active in Venice, where he worked for the publisher Nicolo Cavalli.

Publisher: Nicolo Cavalli (1730–1822)

Comparable works are in the collection of The British Museum
