A rare and unusual George II period telescopic table or stand in mahogany.

Scottish, c. 1750

The circular dished top above an extending square column of the telescopic action, having moulded corners and raised on a tripod base with cabriole legs ending in pad feet.

The stem of the telescopic column is inscribed 'John Sinclair ..754', which almost certainly refers to Sir John Sinclair of Ulbster, 1st Baronet (10 May 1754 – 21 December 1835), a Scottish politician, writer on finance and agriculture and the first person to use the word statistics in the English language. A member of the family of the Earls of Caithness, and was born at Thurso Castle, Caithness. Created a baronet in 1786.

This table, apparently one of a pair, possibly comes from Thurso Castle, with another similar example sold in Edinburgh in 2016.
