An unusual early 19th century mahogany writing table of 'kidney' shape, with patinated green leather-inset top.
English, circa 1810.
Why we like it
Elegantly understated, this table is useful and versatile with its tooled leather top and slender supports.
Two similar tables were recorded in the collection of Queen Charlotte at Kew Palace. Described as "a very neat Mahogany Horse-shoe Reading Table made the same form as Her Majesty at Kew" at a cost of £4 14 shillings 6 pence.
The kidney shape has always been extremely rare and sought after design in antique furniture .
