Fine Regency period mahogany two-tier table, of exceptional quality, attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London,

English, circa 1820.

Why it is special?

Solid, chunky architectural quality, typical of the Gillow firm, beautifully aged Spanish mahogany, no longer available for cabinetmaking. A superbly versatile piece, ideal as a drinks table / bar trolley, or can be used as a lamp or sofa end table.

History

The present piece's design is invariably associated with the London and Lancaster firm of Gillows. A closely related design appears in the Gillows' Estimate Sketch books (Westminster City Archives) in 1826 (No.3556) supplied to Ferguson and Co. for Barton J., Esq., and in 1830, supplied to Mr. Bastard (No.3962). The superb construction and choice of timbers are also typical of Gillows.

A matched pair of closely related tables, attributed to Gillows, sold Christie's, London, 11 February 1999, Lot 28; and a further related example sold at Bonhams, London, 16 July 2008, Lot 158.

Fine antique condition, slight warping to top tier which does not affect its functionality. Carving to the edges of tiers are possibly 19th century embellishments.
