A superb set of six 19th century mahogany dining chairs by Wright and Mansfield, after the Gillows design.

English, c. 1875

Stamped by the maker; A.R.H. and numbered '2762'; some retaining the manufacturer's original labels, 'WRIGHT AND MANSFIELD, 104 NEW BOND STREET, W.'

Each with a canopy bead carved crest rail, centered with a wheatsheaf, above a splat formed of three pierced uprights, channeled and carved with foliage; the stuff-over serpentine seat, raised on fluted tapering front legs terminating in spade feet, and sabre back supports. Dense mahogany, superb colour and patina.

During the second half of the 19th century the partnership of Alfred Wright, a cabinet maker and Thomas Mansfield, a decorator became hugely successful. The company pioneered the revival of the 18th century furniture, making the finest quality copies of the best period designs, often mistaken later for the originals. Wright and Mansfield had ceased trading by 1886.
