Smart Regency Table, Attributed to Gillows
Smart Regency Table, Attributed to Gillows
An unusually slender side or card table, firmly attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London.
Circa 1820.
Why we love it
This elegant table has most unusual slender proportions, which, together with the idiosynchratic Gillows design, quality and spectacular choice of veneers, make it a desirable candidate to fill a narrow space. With a useful concealed frieze drawer, it is also ideal at the bedside or beside a sofa supporting a chic lamp. Its restrained Regency design works perfectly well for classic, contemporary and eclectic interiors.
Attribution
Though not stamped, this elegant table is identical to a "mahogany ecarte table" design with "mahogany partitions in [the drawer]" illustrated in Gillows of Lancaster's Estimate Sketch Books, folio 3557, dated 14 December 1826, made by John Miller.
A nearly identical table, although slightly later in date, was sold Christie's London, 27 November 2012, lot 90.
The top swivels and folds over to reveal the original green cloth covered surface, framed by beautifully figured veneers.
