Regency Ormolu Mounted Calamander Card Table
Regency Ormolu Mounted Calamander Card Table
A striking early 19th century Regency period Calamander pedestal card table in the manner of George Simson
English, circa 1815.
The swivel action foldover top, opening to a green baize lined playing surface, above a vibrant frieze with central brass-moulded tablet, over the square cut column support raised on a platform base, having gilt-brass mounts modelled as Grecian masks flanked by palmettes to each concave side, standing on four downswept sabre legs, having gilt-brass acanthus leaves mounts to the knees and terminating in original gilt-brass capped casters. Remains of the original trade label to the underside.
The present table shares similarities in design and construction with another ormolu-mounted calamander card table, bearing the label of George Simson, sold Christie's, London, 23 May 2012, Lot 380.
George Simson, cabinet-maker and undertaker, traded from 19 St Paul's Churchyard from 1787 until 1840. He was among the specialist manufacturers of Grecian-black calamander furniture, ormolu-enriched in the French fashion.
