A very unusual mid-18th century George II period mahogany country house hunt table, or dining table for 6 persons, on very well-drawn straight cabriole legs, with longitudinal leaves supported on twin gate legs.
English or Irish, circa 1750
Why we like it
This very smart, table is the epitome of the great Georgian design combined with excellent mid-18th century joinery and craftsmanship. Made of extremely dense solid Cuban mahogany, this table is chunky and robust, exuding quality and displaying and outstanding original colour and natural patina, acquired over centuries of use and loving care. Notably, the top and drop leaves are made of solid single planks of mahogany of a rare, monumental girth.
This useful and versatile will look perfect in a hallway of a country home, or can make for a generous, sociable oval dining room table for 6–8 persons. Popular at the time as they could be easily set aside to make space for entertaining, or carried outside to host drinks after a hunt.
