An extremely rare and very special set of three Chinese-export black lacquer boxes, intricately gilt-decorated with a monogram 'DF' in the central medallion, within exquisite trailing grape-vines and foliage.
Canton, circa 1800.
Why we like them
The exquisite decoration of these lacquer boxes is simply superb, which, combined with their miraculously amazing state of preservation, makes these boxes a true collector's dream.
Context
Chinese-export lacquerware that was personalised with a monogram, or an armorial device, is extremely rare and particularly sought after. Only the wealthiest and most powerful patrons could commission personalised items through the best luxury goods retailers of the era. The orders were then painstakingly handcrafted in Canton to be shipped to Britain. All of them being special commissions, personalised lacquerware always stood out for its much higher quality and artistic level.
Such luxurious items were popular in England during the height of fashion for oriental exoticism, called chinoiserie in Europe.
