An interesting collection of four mid-18th century Georgian period tea caddies of rare shapes and most splendid wood grain.
English, circa 1740–70.
Why we like them
While all four boxes originate from the same era, each of them is different and very special, reflecting the history and fashions of the time. The earliest one is made in native burl walnut but its design is influenced by the avant-garde French fashion; its younger sibling of similar bombé shape marks the transition to the use of fashionable mahogany, after its import had become possible. The third example displays a very rare late version of the same bombé shape, marking the transition of tastes from baroque to neoclassicism late in the 1760s. Finally, the fourth example is distinguished by its absolutely timeless, angular style that perfectly reflected the protestant ethics of the period and remained relevant well into the 19th century.
Superb quality, colour and patination, excellent original antique condition.
