A very fine Regency period rosewood daybed or recamier, exquisitely carved and decorated with ormolu mounts and ornate Copes castors. Bearing the trade label of James Mein of Kelso.Scotland, circa 1820–25. Why we like itIts great, flowing design, superb quality and amazingly original condition with no restorations except reupholstery, make this rare, labeled piece of British furniture-making, a really special find. A beautifully versatile piece, can be used with or without the backrest. James Mein of Kelso (1759-1830) was one of the most prominent Scottish cabinet makers of the Regency era.Mein's work is in the collection of many established Scottish Border's families, notably the Duke of Roxburghe of Floors Castle and the Earl and Countess of Haddington at Mellerstain. Arguably Mein's most successful and recognisible style is a pared-down classicism that has been referred to as 'Scottish Biedermeier'.
