An unusual pair of hall chairs of the George III neoclassical design, with the Grecian urn-shaped backs, painted and distressed in the manner of ancient Etruscan pottery. English, early 1900’s.
Why we like them
These chairs are unusually made to an extremely austere, unembellished design of unmistakably neoclassical inspiration – possibly to complement an existing 18th century set. Their urn-shaped backs are inspired by ancient kraters, used by the Greeks to mix wine and water at their symposia. The Georgians were obsessed with the classical Greek culture and often used the motifs seen on the 'Grand Tour' or excavated objects in decoration and design.
