George III Mahogany Chest of Drawers, in the manner of Gillows
George III Mahogany Chest of Drawers, in the manner of Gillows
An unusual late George III mahogany Chest of Drawers, in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster and London.
English, c. 1790.
The rectangular top, with a reeded edge and rounded projecting corners, above the three figured well graduated cockbeaded drawers, with brass lion-mask ring handles; flanked by reeded corner columns, terminating in bold turned and reeded toupie feet. The bottom edge strung with ebonised line. Back panelled.
Related reeded pilasters and projecting corners of the top appear on a design for a straight fronted chest in the Gillow Estimate Sketch Books for 1789, supplied to Gillow's London shop. Similar feet and other decorative features also appear on a library desk, formerly in the collection of HRH The Duke of Kent, illustrated in Geoffrey Beard and Judith Goodison, English Furniture, 1500-1840, Oxford, 1987, p. 276 and Ronald Phillips, Fine Antique English Furniture, 2013, p. 208. For a closely related chest attributed to Gillows, see also Christie's, 4 September 2012, Lot 304.
