A superb quality Grand Tour-inspired bronze table lamp, fashioned as Ionic column.
France, 19th century.
Why we like it
Of quintessentially classical, timeless design inspired by ancient Greek examples, this pair of architectural table lamps is superbly decorative. They are exceptional in their monumental scale and in the exquisite quality of the bronze casting, evident down to the most minute detail, such as the egg-and-dart moulding and the finely scrolled volutes.
The Ionic order is one of the three canonic orders of classical architecture, the other two being the Doric and the Corinthian. There are two lesser orders: the Tuscan (a plainer Doric), and the rich variant of Corinthian called the composite order. The ancient architect and architectural historian Vitruvius associates the Ionic with feminine proportions (the Doric representing the masculine).
