A smart-looking pair of late-18th century chairs, retaining their original, black-painted and gilt decoration; possibly by Gillows of Lancaster and London after their 1799 design. English, circa 1790–1800.
Why we like them
A fabulous pair of chairs, looking gorgeous in their original, distressed ebonised and gilt decoration. Extremely rare, wonderfully elegant design, it looks refreshingly modern and would perfectly suit a classic or a modern home.
Design
These chairs virtually match the Gillows design dated 24.7.1799 that is preserved in the Westminster archives and published in L.Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760–1800, fig. 287. Essentially a lighter version of this design, with their caned seats and back panels instead of upholstery and veneers, these chairs share the same distinctive elements such as the tapered square-cut uprights of the backs, terminating in relief paterae.
