A pair of unusual and decorative lacquered brass 'bouillotte' table lamps, fashioned as Ancient Roman oil lamps, each for two lightbulbs and with adjustable yellow 'tôle peinte' shades. France, early to mid-20th century.
Why we like them
Their highly unusual, very decorative form lends these lamps a quirky, almost theatrical appearance.
Design
Inspired by the exuberant Empire designs by Pierre François Léonard Fontaine (1762–1853) and Charles Percier (1764–1838) from their Recueil de Decorations Intérieures (1812), fig.7 pl. 18 in particular.
