An extremely rare mid-19th century Chinese export red lacquer and gilt-decorated table. Canton, circa 1830–60.
Why we like it
An exquisite example of oriental decorative art. The hinged top reveals a beautifully decorated inner compartment, useful to place small objects or jewellery.
Scarlet-lacquered pieces are incredibly rare to find, especially in this amazing state of preservation. All the original lacquer is present and still retains remarkably vivid colour. The gilt and polychrome decoration is absolutely stunning and is presented in a remarkably complete condition. A truly rare piece of exquisite craftsmanship.
Such luxurious items were popular in England during the height of fashion for oriental exoticism, called chinoiserie in Europe. Available to order through best luxury goods retailers of the era, such exquisite items as lacquerware, botanical gouaches or reverse-painted glass, were manufactured in Canton to be shipped to Europe.
