An unusually shallow open bookcase, with brass and ormolu mounts, in the manner of Marsh and Tatham.

English, circa 1820.

Why we like it

We like its elegantly restrained, architectural design, bold proportions and the exquisite decoration.

This bookcase displays a number of stylistic features related to the oeuvre of the London firm of William Marsh (active 1775-1810) and Thomas Tatham (1763-1818).

It reflects the French 'antique' manner adopted around 1805 for the library furnishings of the London mansion of George, Prince of Wales, later King George IV. Its austere Grecian character, with stepped plinth, brass-edged pilasters and neoclassical ormolu mounts, relates to a bookcase sold Christie's London, 4 June 2008, lot 274.

Restorations to top.
