An extremely rare pair of solid blown glass table lamps, of the iconic Atlantic model, designed by Michael Bang for Holmegaard Glasværk. Denmark, Copenhagen, 1978.

Why we like it

We love the clean, timeless look of these lamps, echoing the design of 17th century candlesticks, and their heavy, solid hand-made quality.

Design

Designed by Michael Bang for Danish glass company Holmegaard. Model ‘Atlantic’, first introduced in 1978 and made until 1984. The solid glass gives it a classic feel without compromising the clean, modern look. The light shines in a wonderful way trough the base. Signed at the top of the base with two original stickers.

Michael Bang & Holmegaard Glasværk

Michael Bang (1942–2013) was a Danish designer and ceramicist behind some of Holmegaard’s most widespread and successful designs over the years, and many have become collectors’ items. Michael Bang was the son of Holmegaard’s first designer, Jacob E. Bang and, before he joined Holmegaard Glass Factory, he worked at Bjørn Wiinblad’s workshop, the Royal Copenhagen Porcelain Factory, and Ekenäs Glasbruk AB in Sweden.

In his design work, Michael Bang was a master of connecting the simple with the practical, which is synonymous with Scandinavian lifestyle and everyday life – and then adding that unique, original twist or fun shape to the glass, making him one of the best glass artists. It was Michael Bang who added bright colours to the glass, as seen by the storage jars in the Palet range which, with their bright colours, became glass’ answer to contemporary pop culture, with pieces made from mouth-blown glass in the original colours that were typical of the 1970s.

Holmegaard has been creating quality glassware for almost two centuries. The legendary glassworks has collaborated with scores of celebrated designers over its long history, including Arne Jacobsen, Louise Campbell, Bodil Kjær and many others, with each artisan crafting vases, bottles and other serveware and decorative objects that are widely loved by collectors and art connoisseurs alike.
