A very decorative Napoleon III period patinated spelter figure of a camel carrying a glass barrel, now mounted as table lamp.
France, circa 1860's–70's.
Why we like it
Wonderfully sculptural and exotic, redolent of the oriental exuberance, this beautiful lamp, complete with an exquisite custom gilded shade, will become a splendid accent in any room.
Napoleon Bonaparte created a dromedary regiment in 1799 for his Egyptian campaign and himself rode a camel. Many artists of the time were extremely taken by the air of exoticism of this majestic animal, the perfect incarnation of the wave of orientalism that swept through the nineteenth century.
