A superbly decorative 19th century six-panel gold-leaf screen, decorated with exquisite ink drawings from 17th–18th centuries.
China, Qing dynasty.
Why we like it
We like its impressive proportions which make it perfect for a feature wall, and the exquisite quality of decoration.
Such luxurious items were popular in England during the height of fashion for oriental exoticism, called chinoiserie in Europe. In the 20th century, Chinese screens still remained a staple in the European interior design. Coco Chanel had a collection of 32 rare screens, which she proudly displayed in her home at 31 Rue Cambom, Paris. She one stated "I've loved Chinese screens since I was eighteen years old. I nearly fainted with joy when, entering a Chinese shop, I saw a screen for the first time."
