A very decorative coffee table, made from a late 17th century Chinese lacquer screen panel, covered with a glass top.
Circa 1920's – 1940's conversion.
Why we love it
We like its useful proportions and the tastefully made conversion. The old lacquer panel, exquisitely carved and polychrome-decorated with figures and pagodas, was repurposed early
in the 20th century to form this beautiful table.
It was a common practice in the 18th century to incorporate oriental lacquer panels into furniture made in Europe. The most virtuoso of the French maître ébénistes laid the Chinese lacquer onto the most complex curvilinear surfaces.
