A superb quality George III period pembroke table, in the style of Thomas Chippendale.

English, circa 1770's.

Why we like it

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. This brilliantly minimalist Georgian design is so amazing that many would have thought it was created in mid-20th century Denmark. Chunky and sober, clean rectilinear shape, superbly executed of the best materials available at the time. The only embellishment is the spectacular fiddleback mahogany on the top. High quality dense mahogany also used as secondary timber, including the drawer linings and swing lopers. A great specimen of English design and craftsmanship.

The chamfered underside of the drawer rail and inside of the legs, block feet, the extensive use of mahogany as secondary timber, and the elegant, simple handle on this table are all distinctive features often associated with the work of Thomas Chippendale (1718–1779). A pair of similar Pembroke tables, also bearing the distinctive chamfering under their drawer rails, were supplied by Thomas Chippendale to Ninan Home for Paxton House, Berwickshire circa 1775 (C. Gilbert, The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale, London, 1978, vol. I, p. 274, fig. 457).
