A very smart and unusually clever early 19th century satinwood metamorphic table, of excellent golden colour and patination.

Closed, it is a slender occasional table. The double-folding top, which opens to the sides and rests on pull-out supports, sits above a single frieze drawer with a lion-mask brass knob, and a slide — just large enough for a candle, a book or a cup of tea — is concealed beneath the drawer. The whole is raised on elegant square tapering legs, each edge crisply outlined in ebonised stringing.

England, circa 1810.

Why we love it

We love the ingenuity of this little table, which is so typical of the Regency taste for furniture that does more than one thing. Folded, it takes up almost no room and stands happily beside a chair or at the end of a sofa. Opened, it becomes a proper surface for writing, cards or supper for one. But above all, we are in love with the flame satinwood figuring that ripples across the board like watered silk. It has mellowed over two centuries to a warm honeyed gold, and the figure in those leaves is simply glorious. It is a piece that rewards being used. Mesmerising!
